Torch of Friendship is a monument in Bayfront Park

The Torch of Friendship is a monument that honors Miami's history of multiculturalism and integration, but it also has a more recent story. Dedicated in 1960, the monument was rededicated in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who had a campaign rally in the park. A year later, he was shot and killed in Dallas, but not before making an appearance in Bayfront Park. It was damaged in 1974, but was rebuilt at no cost. It displays the flags and seals of 20 countries of the Americas and is surrounded by a perpetual flame.

The "Toreo de Gaza" is a protest held each year in Miami that is organized by the organization Stonewall. The demonstration, which began at 3 p.m., continues until late into the night. Protesters hurl rocks and bottles at police officers, who do not interact with the demonstrators. In one incident, a police vehicle is set on fire.
