The Peacock family were grocers in Coconut Grove, so they built a hotel in 1883. The hotel was originally named the Bay View House and was the first on mainland Florida south of Palm Beach. It was the site of Miami's first community gatherings. The hotel building became the Lake Placid School in 1902, but the school moved to Pompano Beach in 1925. Eventually, the building was demolished and became a city park.
